My Garden Lady

Gold Medal winning Garden at the Royal Norfolk Show (2008)

ORIGINS
I have always loved being outdoors, since I was a child...I hate being stuck indoors for any amount of time and feel the pull of the woods, the marshes, the fields, the hill and the beach or the cliffs – in fact anywhere except the city or within four walls. I Loved to help my grandparents tend their large garden in the lovely Leicestershire countryside.
Growing up I realised I was never going to be able to work indoors.

TRAINING

Aged twenty five and after having my first two children I decided to enrol at Easton College where I completed every course I could get enrolled on from basic horticulture, plant propagation and science, garden design, botany and ;and land management. I progressed from National Certificate, through National Diploma up to Higher National Diploma acquiring my City and Guild Certificate of Garden Design and RHS Certificate of Garden Design along the way. All my qualifications were awarded with distinction and I was both Easton College runner up Student of the Year and Anglia Ruskin University Student of the Year (although heavily pregnant with the third of my children, James – who is now 20 , 6ft 3 and a budding gardener.

FIRST STEPS

After leaving college I had a taste of commercial nursery work at British Wild Flowers, Burlingham Norfolk, which was fast becoming a burgeoning presence in the new online sales phenomenon. I covered every aspect of plant production from seed to dispatch. I gained extensive insight into all aspects of propagation and cultivation. Through my connections with British Wild Flowers, I was able to network with other gardeners as well known as Carol Klein, who had many dealings with the nursery, and local garden celebrity, Bob Flowerdew.

SHOW GARDENS

I then moved onto setting up my own small design and landscaping company, AMB garden design with my partner and enjoyed some success across a wide range of projects requiring patio, timber construction, water features, lighting and extensive planting. In 2006 I was invited, by the norfolk and norwich horticultural society to build and exhibit a display at the royal norfolk showground. My garden was awarded a silver medal. I followed this up a year later with a new design and achieved gold!!

After the economical difficulties of 2008/9 took their grip on the construction industry, I diversified into online plant sales, setting up a micro nursery producing heirloom vegetable varietals and new vegetable introductions. I enjoyed some success and became Ebays pre-eminent rare tomato dealer for several years. I had customers from Lands End to John O Groats or thereabouts plus requests from abroad which sadly I could not supply due to plant passport restrictions. A highlight was being asked to supply Rick Stein's kitchen garden producing my veg for his chefs – good times but a lot of postage and packing!!

TODAY

As confidence began to come back into the leisure industries, I continued to grow my online plant sales whilst setting myself up as a gardener. My Garden Lady has been in business now for two years and I have built up a small but loyal clientele who rely on my weekly visits to maintain and develop their garden spaces. I have a busy schedule but always have room for new clients - so, whatever your garden requirements, be it a new border or a complete redesign, call me
